Ynystawe v Pontardawe Sat. Aug. 18th

Ponty skipper steve Jenkins called correctly and elected to bat in a game reduced to 47 overs owing to some ground dampness at the start. Progress was slow and the score at 10 overs was 12 without loss. Accurate bowling by Robert "Dapper" Draper and Callum Daniels accounted for this. The first wicket fell at 23 after 13 overs. 2 more wickets fell at 31, one of which was a brilliant run out of Bav.Patel by Chris Andrews. Jeff Hapgood top scored with a well stuck 21.Steve Jenkins, Bav Patel and Young Josh Herbert were also worthy of mention. For Ynystawe, Draper returned excellent figures of 3 for 24 from 15 unchanged overs. Young Tom Davies bowled a straight, tight line and was rewarded with 3 for 12 from 8 overs. Ponty ended on 114 for 8.
Ynystawe reached their target after 23 overs for the loss of 2 wickets, Brendon McKay leading the way with a punishing 37, Nathan Bruce not out 30 and Chris Andrews unbeaten on 29 as Ynystawe took another step towards the championship and left Ponty rooted at the foot of the table.
John Wilsher took a team photo of the Ponty team and it was good to see everyone smiling - keep smiling guys it WILL get better!

Pontardawe v Swansea Sat. Aug. 11th

Stand-in captain Jonathan Howells called correctly and decided that Pontardawe would have a bat. Ponty were fielding a largely inexperienced team ,half of which were under 18.
Swansea, on the other hand, put out a side with some proven individuals in its midst and Ponty had no answer as Rhys Batcup bagged 5 wickets for 4 runs off 8 overs. He was ably supported by Suki Singh (2 for 8 off 8) and Sanhad Sawlani (2 for 10 off 5.5 overs).Ponty succumbed at 44 all out.
Swansea knocked off the runs without loss. Bevan Daniels 28 n.o.and Dominic Evans 18 n.o.
This is a steep learning curve for the young Pontardawe players but they must not be discouraged- they are being asked to "punch above thir weight" at the moment and should find life in Division 2 next season a little easier.
Take heart!

Maesteg Celtic v Pontardawe August 4th

Steve Jenkins won the toss and invited Celtic to take first knock with showers forecast. There was some early success for Jeff Hapgood who sent both openers back and the total on 34. The next wicket fell on 76 but a 101 run partnership between Rhodri Thomas (106 - 9 fours and 5 sixes)and Glen Lawler 29 not out took the score to 177 for 4 off the 42 overs of a rain - interrupted innings.(An early tea was taken at 2.45 p.m.)
Pontardawe got 136 for 6 off their 42 overs with useful contributions from Tony Chilcott who "dropped anchor " for an unbeaten 27, Steve Jenkins with a quick 27 (6 fours), Jeff Hapgood (25) and Jamie Stearman-Phillips (21).
For Celtic, Glen Lawler took 2 for 21 and Jason Cook was accurate with 1 for 15 from 8 overs.
Ponty fell a frustrating 2 runs short of sharing the draw points, as Celtic bagged 17 points and Ponty 5. In so doing, Celtic leapfrogged Ponty at the foot of the table.

Pontardawe 3rds v Penllergaer.

For the second week in a row Pontardawe III held out for a losing draw in division two of the Alpha Fasteners West Wales Cricket Association.

Penllergaer had a strong batting line-up and all of their batsmen contributed runs and proved difficult to get out. Opener Simon Richards top-scored with 44 and was only run out late in the innings thanks to a brilliant throw from the mid-wicket boundary by Carwyn Jenkins, who also took two superb catches in the same position (off the bowling of his dad Ian). Other batsmen made 32, 26, 23, 21 and 17 as the home side rattled up 200-7. Ian Jenkins was again the most successful Ponty bowler with 3-47 off 12 overs. Young Callum Rees, bowling for the first time for the 3rds, impressed with 5-0-15-1.

Pontardawe in reply lost a couple of early wickets but a long partnership by opener Huw Binding (22) and No. 4 John Harry (58no) stabilised the innings and meant Ponty were able to safely see out the match for a losing draw on 114-6.

Ponty earned 6 points, Penllergaer 18pts.

Pontardawe v Gowerton July 28th 2012

Gowerton won the toss and elected to bat. Ciaran Chilcott and Steve Jenkins kept the batsmen quiet for the first 15 overs without a wicket and a breakthrough was not achieved until the 30th over with the introduction of Simon Davies into the attack and the score on 130. Gowerton went on to total 251 for 5 at tea with captain David Roberts top scoring with 89, Graeme Hughes 72 and Josh Matthews, having retired hurt earlier, returning to make an unbeaten 36. Simon Davies took all 5 wickets to fall for 64 runs off 15 overs. Ponty did not really help their cause with some half a dozen spilt catches.
Pontardawe totalled 127 all out, Jeff Hapgood the pick of the batting with 36 not out. Again it was the late introduction of a bowler, Dave Clarke, which hastened Ponty's demise as he wrapped up the innings with 5 for 19 from just 5 overs.
A convincing win, therefore, for Gowerton by 124 runs.

Tata Steel v Pontardawe

Fine at last! Steve Jenkins called correctly and inserted Tata. The first 10 overs yielded only 19 runs as Jeff Hapgood and Steve Jenkins tied openers Paul Donovan and Morgan Jones down but the pair put on 114 runs before Jones was dismissed for 46. Donovan found another good partner in Rohan Herbert and the two shared another 100 partnership before the experienced Donovan was bowled by Bav. Patel for a well crafted 104. Herbert went on to complete a very attractive 56 from 47 balls including 9 fours and a six.
Captain Phil Taylor fired a rapid 32 (4 fours and 1 six as the Ponty bowlers toiled in the sun and a formidable total of 267 for 3 was reached at tea.
For Ponty Bav. Patel took 2 of the wiwickets to fall for 65 runs off 10 overs.
Pontardawe in reply were dissmised for 143 1n 40 overs. Bav. Patel top scored with 25, Nick Morgan 23 and Gareth Pritchard 21. Most successful for Tata were Adam Jardine and Taylor Rees who both returned figures of 3 for 24 from 7 overs. Skipper Phil Taylor bagged 2 for 15. So a convincing 124 run victory for Tata but all finally were able to enjoy a game of cricket in pleasant conditions.

Pontardawe v Clydach

Skipper Steve Jenkins called correctly and inserted Clydach on a damp Rec. track with showers forecast.
A few early showers reduced the contest to one of 47 overs per side but with the score at 81 for 6 the players sought cover and a heavy spell of rain meant an early tea at 3.45 p.m. and a contest of 44 overs.
However, on inspecting the conditions after tea it was evident that no further play was possible and the match was abandoned.
For Clydach, Ieuan Davies top scored with 26, Jo Farthing, 15, and Paul Crocker 13 not out tried to get their team to a reasonable total but it was the unchaged attack of Steve Jenkins and Steve Jones which held sway with Steve Jenkins having figures of 15-4-28-3 and Steve Jones 15-1-46-3.
The only winner yet again in a summer which many experienced observers rate the worst ever thus far was the weather.

Pontardawe 3rds v Dafen        30th June

Pontardawe 3rds were well beaten by a very strong Dafen team at a wind-swept Crown Park in Llanelli on Saturday. Ponty bowled well enough but found it difficult to contain a powerful batting line-up, not helped by four dropped catches. Three home batsmen reached their 30s and one hit 51, despite Tony Chilcott's excellent 8-2-30-4 into the teeth of the gale (and uphill!). Richard Harry took 2-48 as Dafen made 220-8 in their 45 overs.

Such a big target was always going to be too much for Ponty and despite Davey Bloomer (17) giving us a good start, only Richard Harry (19), skipper Jonathan Howells (39no) and Ian Jenkins (11) got into double figures as Ponty were bowled out for 107 for a 113-run defeat. We gained four bowling points and three batting points.

On this evidence it will be very surprising if Dafen don't win division two this season.

Pontardawe v Llangennech

Owing to a damp square, the umpires called for an early tea at 3.00 p.m. and a start was made in a 34 over game at 3.30 p.m. A further stoppage reduced the match to 33 overs and Pontardawe had progressed to 40 for 2 wickets after 16 overs when a heavy shower drove the players from the field and the match was abandoned at 4.32 p.m.
Rhodri Davies was 19 not out and Oli Furneaux 13 not out.
For Llangennech, Rhodri Lewis took the 2 wickets to fall for 26 runs off 8 overs.
So it was 5 points apiece and both clubs still look for their first win of the season as the only winner was the weather in what is proving to be a frustrating season thus far.

Neath v Pontardawe

On a cold, cloudy, windy day of flaming June at the Gnoll, Pontardawe skipper Steve "Tucker" Jenkins called correctly and decided to bat on a surprisingly firm wicket considering the recent deluges.
Darryl Jeffries was first to perish when calling a sharp single he was run out by some smart Neath ground fielding.
Runs proved difficult to come by against an accurate Neath opening attack.
Indeed, the boundary rope was not reached until the 22nd over and Ponty were finally dismissed for 94 in the 44th over.
Young Jamie Stearman-Phillips top scored with 21 (4 fours), whilst Richard Felton, Nick Joshi, Nick Morgan and Tom Dew all got into double figures but were unable to make it count. No names, no packdrill, but Ponty's batsmen must value their wickets more highly and ensure that all 50 overs are used, when a more competitive total might be set.
Credit, howevever to Neath's bowlers who did not let Pont escape the shackles.
Wickets were shared, but Ashley Colsten bowling late in the innings mopped up with splendid figures of 4 for 11 from his 5.3 overs.
With rain threatening, Neath did not want to hang about and reached their target in the 18th over for the loss of 3 wickets.
Callum Walters, not out 37, Jordan Thomas (22) and Lloyd Lewis (20) saw their team safely home. Steve Jenkins got all 3 wickets to fall for 13 runs in 4 overs.
As the teams departed, rain returned once again.

Pontardawe 3rds v Swansea 3rds

For the second week running Pontardawe 3rds let victory slip from their grasp at the Rec. After having failed to chase 164 against Penllergaer the week before (May 26th) when we were all out for 145 despite Gareth 'Groyne' Davies's swashbuckling 46, last Saturday (June 2nd) we again failed to chase a lowish total after having bowled and fielded very well.

We dismissed Swansea 3rds for 92, the wickets shared around between Lloyd Tubb (2-38), Richard Harry (2-20), Ian Jenkins (2-23), Adam Thornton (1-0) and Jonathan Howells (3-9). But despite youngsters Davy Bloomer and Callum Rees putting on 25 for the first wicket - Davy was our top scorer with 19 - and fellow under-16s player Josh Herbert chipping in with a determined 14, the older heads on the team let the youngsters down and we were tumbled out for just 69. A very frustrating defeat.

This coming Saturday (June 9th) we are home to Ynysygerwn 4ths.
 SWCA 2nd XI    SAT. JUNE 2 2012
                                                              PONTARDAWE V MAESTEG CELTIC

On an overcast afternoon, Celtic won the toss and invited Ponty to take first knock. Ponty made good use of the wicket and declared after 46 overs having reached 256 for 6. The highlight of the batting was undoubtedly a fine century by Nik Joshi, who in an innings lasting nearly 2 hours scored 114 (6 sixes and 8 fours). Good support came from Arwel Rees who followed up his 50 last week with 41 (5 fours). Steve Jones breezed in with an unbeaten 26 (2 sixes and 2 fours)and at the top of the order Ryan Herbert compiled a patient 20.
For Celtic, Jason Cook stood out with 4 for 44 from 15 unchanged overs. Lewis Jenkins took 2 for 19 late on, whilst the rest of the bowling was mostly put to the sword. At tea, no one could recall when Pontardawe 2nd XI had last declared their innings.
Celtic made a good start to their reply and an opening stand of 55 was put together in 17 overs between Aled Jones with 33 and Jason Arnold who batted for 2 hours to score 23. Lewis Jenkins got 29 (5 fours) in just 36 minutes.
For Ponty, Jeff Hapgood was the pick of the bowling  with 4 for 22 off 9.2 overs while it was that man Joshi again, who bowling unchanged took 3 for 59 off 15 overs to ensure he took "man of the match!"
Celtic capitulated for 149 in 48.2 of a possible 54 overs to give Ponty a win by 107 runs and a maximum points haul of 28 to take them comfortably off the foot of the table.

SWCA Div. 1  2nd XI  Gowerton v Pontardawe   Sat. May 26th 2012

On a warm, sunny day at Victoria Road, Gowerton called correctly and decided to bat in ideal conditions. A total of 283 for 3 was reached before captain David Roberts called a halt after 41 overs having scored an unbeaten 107 (17 x 4, 3 x 6. He was given admirable support from James Gardiner,64 not out (10 x 4,1 x 6) as an unbroken 4th wicket partnership of 170 was attained in an attacking fashion. Further notable contributions came from Graeme Hughes, 46 and Will Jenkins ,38 these two making an opening partnership of 101.
While Ponty's bowlers toiled in the sun, captain Steve Jenkins returned the creditable figures of 3 for 35 off 8 overs.
As Ponty set about their daunting task, an opening partnership  of 49 was compiled between Ryan Herbert and Bav Patel, the latter scoring 28 (6 x 4).
Arwel Rees making a rare but welcome return to the ranks then hit an attractive quick 50 in 46 minutes (9 x 4, 1 x 6)and whilst he was batting with Neil Jones, 25, the unlikely looked fleetingly possible. Jeff Hapgood with 23 (5 x 4)batted soundly until being the last man out as Pontardawe got maximum batting points totalling 203 in a display showing some character.
For Gowerton, Andrew Jones, 3 for 38, Oliver Moyes, 2 for 20 and Will Gambold, 2 for 21 bowled well as a victory by 80 runs was achieved.

SWCA 2nd XI   Clydach v Pontardawe  Sat. 12th May 2012
On a fine day at Waverley Park, Jonathan Donne called correctly and decided to take first knock for Clydach. Clydach scored 151 all out in 38.3 overs.
Nicky Fisher top scored with 62 and Jonathan Donne scored 20. Clydach were 130 for 5 after 30 overs and a total of 200 looked likely, but 4 wickets fell with the score on 138 and an eventual total of 151 off 38.3 overs  had to be settled for at tea.
For Ponty  Jeff Hapgood with 3 for 18 off 12 overs, Steve Jones 3 for 23 and captain Steve Jenkins 2 for 44 were the most successful bowlers.
In reply, Ponty made sedate progress  and were only 31 for 2 after 20 overs.
However, a stand of 70 between Simon Davies and Steve Jones accelerated the scoring rate and Steve Jones departed for 41 (6 x 4, 1 x 6) whilst Simon went on to score a sound, chanceless 50 before being run out attempting to score the winning run. The target was reached in the 52nd over with 10 overs left in the bank. Pick of the Clydach attack was Adam Farthing who took 4 for 17 off 10 overs. An encouraging win for Ponty after last Saturday's pasting at Dafen. Good Comeback!
Pontardawe 3rds v Ynystawe 3rds

After three rained off games Pontardawe 3rds finally got their season in the Alpha Fasteners West Wales Cricket Association under way on Saturday (May 19th) with an 88-run win at Ynystawe.

Batting first, Ponty were in trouble at 35-5 but plenty of runs from the later batsmen got them out of trouble and took them to a healthy 169-9 from their 45 overs.

Skipper Jonathan Howells led the way with 36, assisted by new recruit Richard Harry (27), Huw Williams (20) and teenager Adam Thornton (19no). Dan Beynon was the best of the Ynys attack with 4-36 from 12 overs.

In reply captain Jonathan Evans (31) held the Ynystawe innings together but no other batsman got into double figures as they fell to 79 all out in the 28th over. Richard Harry took 3-5 off seven overs, aided by Tony Chilcott (2-24) and 12-year-old Iwan Temblett, who took 2-30 in his first game of senior cricket. Also making their senior debuts were junior players Davey Bloomer, who took Ynystawe's final wicket with a caught and bowled, and Cellan Michael, who was unluckily run out on 0.
